Western Herbal Medicine Consultations

Western herbal medicine uses the whole plant to help support the body and bring it back into balance. The constituents of the plant are extracted in the form of tinctures (alcoholic extraction), teas (water extraction) or used as the whole plant in capsules/pills for internal use. Creams or ointments are also used externally.

What to Expect from a Consultation:

An herbal consultation will consider the whole person before deciding on a treatment pathway. First, is a discussion about the reason you have booked an appointment. Next, we speak about your family health history, lifestyle, medical history, medication history and diet. Then a brief discussion about the different bodily systems, such as cardiovascular, digestion and skin. Finally, you may need to have a brief physical examination and your blood pressure taken.

This information helps to build a picture of you as a person, rather than focusing just on the condition. Herbs can help some symptomatic symptoms, however in general, an herbal treatment aims to support your body in correcting the imbalance that has led to the development of a condition.

What Next?

After evaluating the information given in your consultation, a prescription will be formulated using multiple plant extractions. You will usually need to take the herbs 2 – 3 times daily. You may also be given some diet or lifestyle recommendations that could also help improve your health and wellbeing.

I will also be checking for any interactions or cautions between any medications you may be taking and the herbs prescribed.

Once your prescription is ready, we can arrange delivery or collection.

It is advised to book in a follow up consultation 4-6 weeks later, to evaluate whether the herbs are helping, or whether any adjustments need to be made.

Herbal medicine does sometimes take time to have an effect. Please continue with the advised treatment for at least 4 weeks unless you are experiencing any adverse effects.
